Orlando Magic Flex to Spain – Frank Vogel

Frank Vogel ran this set when he was the coach of the Orlando Magic.

It incorporates some common actions of a shuffle cut, Flex cut and Spain action.

Spain action is commonly referred to as middle option on-ball screen followed by screen the screener (STS) action.

1 drives at 4 for a DHO, then shuffle cuts off 5 looking for a pass from 4.
5 steps out to receive a pass from 4.
3 flex cuts of the screen from 1, looking for a pass from 5, then for sets a down screen for 1.

5 drives at 1 for at DHO.
4 steps out to space the floor.
3 sets a back screen for 5.
1 comes off the DHO looking for:
1. shot
2. drive to the basket for a shot
3. pass to 5
4. pass to 3 for a shot

Timing and spacing are critical for this play to best exploit the various options. 5 needs to receive the ball beyond the 3 point line and the DHO with 1 should be above the foul line.

1’s timing after the flex cut is critical. 1 needs to wait until 5 has had an opportunity to look at the pass for 3’s flex cut before cutting off 4 and then the DHO with 5.

There are some good looks in this action and depending on your personnel, you can prioritise different options.

It can be run from both sides of the floor.

Here’s a look at the play.
